Stripping has always proved useful for producers of Hollywood blockbusters since it offered a very simple solution to slide in some nudity into the film, whether it was necessary or not. Explicit scenes created controversy, which in turn brought more people to cinemas, following the idea of that good old wisdom – “sex sells”. Several plotlines were used through the years in order to squeeze in as much stripping as possible into the 90-minutes frame, and most of them became over-used, which made them sleazy clichés and they often got ridiculed. For instance: the stripper with the heart of gold, the stripper with a sick child, the poor college student stripping for tuition, etc. However, some movies gained huge popularity and a large fan base, and here are some of them:
“Showgirls” (1995) is certainly a movie which can be found on every list about striptease movies, and not for good reasons. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring attractive ladies like Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon this film has won record number of RAZZIE awards, i.e. awards for the worst films (or anti-Oscars). Set in a sleazy environment of Vegas strip clubs, this movie with some laughable dialogue and plot also provides a lot of nudity, explicit sex scenes, erotic dances, lap dances and similar.
“Gypsy” (1962) is a musical biopic that was based on real-life adventures of Louise Hovick aka Gypsy Rose Lee – a legendary burlesque queen of 1940s and 50s. Natalie Wood played the role of the famous stripper.
“Blaze” (1989) was another movie based on memoirs of exotic dancer: in this case it was the fiery Blaze Starr that wrote the biography. Lolita Davidovich played the role of the stripper who gets involved with a high-profile politician.
“Striptease” (1996) is another legendary film from the 1990s witch picked the worst reviews and got a lot of negative feedback. Nevertheless, it was watched by a lot of people, predominantly because of the leading actress – Demi Moore in her best years. She plays a role of a single mother who turns to stripping to save her child and even her sexy and seductive moves and smoking-hot body could not save the film from getting Golden Raspberry Award for the worst movie in 1996.
“Barb Wire” (1996) featured the best assets of Pamela Anderson (both of them), but same as with Moore, even the blond bombshell could not save this one. Post apocalyptic sci-fi had major holes in design but her role of a bounty hunter named Barb Wire offered some vivid representations of fetish gear and stripping technique.
“Zombie Strippers” (2008) has some similarities with number 5 on this list, mostly in terms of super-stupid dialogue and plotlines, but also in the sense that a blond beauty is playing a leading role – in this case it was Jena Jameson, a legendary porn-star. Movie was actually about a virus that turned her into a flesh-eating zombie, but most people liked her that way as well.
“From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996) was not about strippers per se, just like the previous entry on the list, but people loved it because of the legendary exotic dance performed by super-hot vampire Salma Hayek, companied by a pet albino boa constrictor. A highly memorable scene, no doubt!
